Damon Brown, a patient who really needs a kidney transplant from Seattle, United States, managed to find a donor on Facebook after he tells a history of illness in a Facebook Page called 'Damon Kidney'.
Although he did not expect to get a donor from there, it turns out his family and colleagues to forward his Facebook page links to all the people they know. Finally, a woman who is actually familiar with Brown's wife for years, willing to give her kidney.
"She said, the kidney is not really for me," said Brown, 38, quoted from Medicalxpress, Monday, January 2, 2012. "He donated his kidney to children, because they deserve to have a father at their side," said Brown.
Even so, the story of Brown, who get kidney instead of Facebook, a place he least expected to find a donor is not the first.
According to the April Paschke, a spokeswoman for United Network for Organ Sharing, a nonprofit that manages the transplant system for the federal government says, are more and more people are met in social media.
"Social media is an extension of how we communicate," says Paschke. "Before the Internet, we find a donor through the church bulletin, message-mouth, or even through advertising," he said.
Earlier this year, a man from Michigan also get a donor kidney through Facebook. A woman from Florida also received kidneys through the people he met on Craigslist.
Brown was actually listed in the list of recipients of kidney patients in the Northwest Kidney Centers. Unfortunately, Brown's health declined rapidly. Before getting a donor on Facebook, he could only lie in bed because they have stayed close to dialysis machines.
